How can I reduce my cholesterol via dieting?

Keep Your Cholesterol Under Control Naturally

While high cholesterol is not in itself dangerous, it often becomes a harbinger for various problems. High cholesterol increases the risk of coronary heart disease and can even lead to heart attacks.

Some amount of cholesterol is necessary for the proper functioning of the immune system, production of red blood cells and the development of the muscular membranes in the body.

Cholesterol is transported to the individual cells of the body by carriers called low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

Too much LDL creates plaque in the blood vessels. This hampers blood circulation and greatly increases the risk of coronary heart disease and even stroke.

What is the normal level of cholesterol?

A total cholesterol level of 200mg/dL with a LDL cholesterol level of 100mg/dL is considered normal. In men, HDL level less than 40mg/dL is considered harmful. In women, it is 50mg/dL.

Natural remedies for controlling cholesterol

1. Evening primrose oil: Oil from the evening primrose seed contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). This substance decreases the concentration of LDL and triglycerides in the blood. Earlier studies show that this oil is more effective in controlling cholesterol than sunflower oil.

2. Red rice yeast: Red rice yeast is a natural supplement that helps lower cholesterol. It is a source of statins, which form the prescription drugs that are used to control cholesterol.

3. Dietary soluble fibre: Soluble fibre found in beans, oats, and psyllium helps bring down blood cholesterol by lowering LDL cholesterol.

4. Lecithin: Lecithin in the form of granules or capsules helps reduce cholesterol levels in the blood by preventing fats from collecting in the arteries. It also helps in dissolving the plaques already formed. Lecithin is a substance produced by the liver to emulsify fats. It is also found naturally in soybean and egg yolk.
